Re a few comments about taking the support ships out first? In the case of warping in to a fight, I'd let the combat vessels go in first, then warp in the support ships at max range from them. If you get it right, youre on the far side of your own ships i.e. the distance between your support ships and the enemy is your max targeting range plus the distance from your own combat ships to the enemy - so you may actually be well outside the opposing fleets targeting / combat range.
Of course they can move into range, but that takes time and during that time theyre taking punishment.

Hmmm I think someone once said that battle plans last right up to the minute battle actually starts
True, you could be that unlucky in which case your support ships are gonna be history in fairly short order.
But its the only way I see them surving by trying to position them as far away from the enemy as possible, close enough to just be in range of your own ships but far enough that targeting / weapons range becomes an issue if the enemy tries to target the support ship.
